Birthday Book

Birthdays are kind of a big deal to me.  I love celebrating my little sweeties special day.  After much trial and error, I have found a great recipe for a fabulous first grade birthday!   The day before their birthday I head to the local party store and pick up a helium balloon in the child’s favorite color.  They love to come into the classroom on their birthday and see a bright colorful birthday balloon tied to their chair.

Who doesn’t love a balloon?
Next, the birthday boy/girl gets to sit in the teacher chair and call on their classmates to ask them questions about their favorite things.  While they ask the questions I record the questions and answers on my easel whiteboard.

When we are finished I take a picture of the student standing next to the whiteboard.  This picture will go in their Birthday Book.
Assembling the Birthday Book
Prep: Copy “Birthday Book”, Hurray!  Hurray!”, and “Happy Birthday” pages onto cardstock.  Copy “Birthday Cake” onto regular copy paper.   Copy enough of the “Birthday Wish” page for each child in the class.
1.   Now that the other students know our Birthday boy/girl a little better they can make a birthday wish for their friend.
2.   The birthday child decorates the cover, colors the words on picture pages, and draws a picture of their birthday cake.
3.  Next,  I print out and attach the child’s picture and class picture to the picture pages.
4. Lastly, I bind them with a binding comb machine using 3/4” binding combs.

  1. I LOVE this! I hate to admit, but I have kind of slacked on birthday's this year and I really shouldn't because they are so darn special to those little sweeties! I will definitely be following your lead with this next year!

  2. I love your balloon idea. We sing the H.B. Song in three languages and I give the child a goodie bag. Have a great day.

  3. Barbara,
I love the idea of singing H.B in different languages. I have another birthday in a couple of weeks and we are going to give that a try!

  7. This is so great. We can't have food anymore and birthdays have become sort of a non event. I really like this idea and can't wait to do it. Thanks!
