Getting Them Home Part Two

Pin It Last summer I shared the labels I use on the first day of school to get my students home safe and sound. Click here to go to that post and download the labels.

I recently had a request to add a label for a daycare van.  So, here it is!!  Just fill in the blank with the name of the daycare van the student rides.  All of the labels can be printed on Avery Labels (5163).

  4. I have a hilarious story about sending kinders to the wrong place! My neighbor teacher was absent one day this year and had a substitute who was a bit in over her head. At the end of the day, she ASKED the kids who rode the bus and one little boy went ahead and got in the bus line, simply because he always wanted to ride the bus! Now, there was a bus list in the sub plans, but it was on the last page and the sub never read that far! So little guy goes down to the bus line and gets put on a bus. Mama comes to pick him up and sub has no clue where he's at because she didn't take note of who she sent to the bus and who went out the door.
Mama is frantic but sub seems thoroughly unconcerned that she lost a 5 year old and she GOES HOME in the middle of everyone else scrambling to try to find the child! The bus drivers were all radioed to check whether they have this child. All the buses radio back that they don't. At this point police are at the school, teachers are out combing the neighborhood, checking ditches and the like, praying like mad.

I drove over to the trailer park down the street and talked to a few kids from the school, let them know we were looking for the little guy. No luck. By this time it's about 5:30, child has been missing for 2 hours! Finally, one of our 5th graders walks down to the school to report that the daycare down the street has an extra child. Teachers rush down with a photo of the child and sure enough, there he is. Turns out he WAS on the bus, but didn't answer the bus driver because he knew he wasn't supposed to be on the bus! When he got to the daycare they didn't even notice they had an extra kid! Luckily, the 5th grader knew we were looking for him and noticed (while visiting friends) that he was there and came to tell us! Longest 2 hours of my life and he wasn't even my student!

Now I am super paranoid about making sure I know who picks up my kiddos and where they go. I never want to go through anything like that again! I have a clipboard with a roster and as each child leaves I quickly note down who took them - either bus #, mom, dad, brother, sister etc. This has saved a lot of trouble as someone would pick up a child and a few minutes later someone else would come looking for the same kiddo! I refer back to the roster and tell them "Oh, your mom already picked him up!" etc.

I love these labels, I can also see using them with a graph! Thanks for sharing!
