Mission Possible

Pin It Every year on the last day of school, after all the kiddos have   headed home for the summer, all of the faculty and staff meet up at a local restaurant.  We have a great time celebrating the successful completion of another school year. I love having time to relax with the amazing people I work so hard with all year!!
At the end of this celebration our principal presents us with our summer “homework”.  Each summer he gives us a book to read as a faculty.  We read it, mark it up and submit to him our ten favorite quotes.  In the fall we spend some of our professional development time discussing the book we have just read.  The book then serves as the theme for our school year.
Here are some the books we have read as a faculty over the last couple of years:

Well, this year he began by showing us a HILARIOUS video he and our assistant principal had made of themselves.  They were dressed as secret agents, scouring the school, and finding these little packages everywhere and I do mean everywhere.Smile

I was a little too excited about the “Agent Shumway” thing… I've always wanted to be a spy!!

When we opened the package we found our
summer read, marking pen, and tabs.

Our school theme for the 2012-13 school year will be “Mission Possible”.   We will be focusing on things that are POSSIBLE, not things that are IMPOSSIBLE!  Our assignment is to highlight and flag passages that we like or dislike that cause us to reflect on how we teach our students.  We then make two lists:

List #1 Top Ten Quotes from the book   List #2 Top Ten List of Possibilities!

This is a list of ideas that we want to incorporate into our classrooms this
coming school year.

Our faculty book study is one of my favorite parts of the summer break.  I love getting new ideas and feeling like I have time to digest them and figure out how to make them work for me and for my students.

Have your read this book?  What did you think??

  2. I so want to get this book! I'm off to check it out at Amazon. We have four brand new teachers joining our ranks this year. I've been asked to mentor one of them and think this might be a fun "welcome to the team" gift. . .

    Enjoy your summer break! :)

  5. Our principal has also chosen this theme for the 14-15 school year. Do you have any pictures or décor ideas that you used or seen at your school that you would share?
